Evelio Peret is a skilled painter, sculptor and creator. He is a visionary, extracting ideas from life and art, Peret combines figurative and surreal expressions, thus creating a distinct and innovative style. Whether still life, portraiture, landscapes or sculpture, Peret's work is extremely passionite. From the lush saturated greens of forest vegetation to the scaly skin of a fresh fat turkey, to the vulnerability of the aging body, Peret works on a humane and highly sensitized level.
Peret was born in Havana, Cuba. At the age of 14 he studied sculpture and painting at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes de la Habana in Cuba. In 1958 he was granted a scholarship to continue studies at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes San Fernando in Madrid.
Receiving another scholarship two years later from the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella, Peret traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was here that he met famous Mexican Muralist, David Alfaro Siqueiros. Peret traveled with Siqueiros to Mexico, assisting with the creation of several large murals in Mexico City. Among these works, "The March of Humanity", a mural created in the auditorium for the 1962 World Olympics.
In 1963 Peret traveled back to Spain and working in Madrid, Barcelona, Paris and Portugal. In 1970 he moved to New York, where he currently resides, working commercially as scenic designer for motion picture and television.
